The school reopened before the roofs did
When the water came into the classrooms, Rokeya moved her lessons onto the embankment. Twelve days later, she had 84 students back.
Rokeya has taught at the same primary school for eleven years. The building sits a metre above the road, which was enough in every flood until this one.
With chalkboards donated through our partner, she started lessons on the embankment where most families had moved. By the second week, parents were taking turns to supervise.
The school building is drying out now. Repairs to the roof and latrines are part of the recovery plan for the next three months.
“The children needed somewhere to be that wasn't waiting. So we did lessons on the embankment.”
